An assistive device is any item, piece of equipment,
or product that is used to increase, maintain or improve
functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.
Assistive devices can make "doing possible" and are
used to help a person overcome a physical limitation
that may be caused by normal aging processes or other
disabilities. Using assistive technology, whether it
is non-technical, mildly technical or highly technical
can make the difference between dependence and independence.
Assistive Devices:
- Make a task easier.
- Enable a person to do an action that is impossible
or difficult.
- Change the environment to prevent potential for
injury.

Examples of Assistive Technology
- Using a wheelchair or crutches makes it possible
for a person who has had a broken leg to move
around. Without the assistive device, mobility
would be impossible.
- Hearing aids can make it possible to hear
the telephone or doorbell ring, or another person
speak. Without the assistive device, an emergency
warning might not be hear.
- Large faced clocks makes it easier to see.
- Large handle kitchen appliances makes it easier
to hold and prepare foods
- Safety rails can provide solid support when
transferring in and out of the shower/tub, or
while washing oneself
- Rubber safety mat for the tub can reduce slipping
and prevent falls
