Food is an important part of the holiday season. It is easy to overindulge, so check out Don't Make Yourself Crazy, Food on the Run, Holiday Eating Tips, and Recipe Resources. Eat well; stay SAFE! 1. Don't Make Yourself Crazy

How can it be? Here we are already in the middle of the hectic December 2007 holiday season. It is a wonderful time to see friends and families and do special things. With this happy season, there are often many added things to do. Shopping for the perfect gifts, traveling, going to parties, and other holiday events are part of the fun that makes this time of year so special. There are other tasks that have to be done, such as meal planning and preparation, grocery shopping, house cleaning, decorating, maintenance, and wrapping gifts. Whew! It seems there just aren't enough hours in the day to get it all done. Daily life responsibilities are still the same, but routines can be shattered.

Our advice is, "Don't make yourself crazy!!" Enjoy this wonderful time. If you feel stressed, either delegate or give it up. Take some time to think about what makes you happy. Enjoy and love what you do, or don't do it. Have a wonderful, healthy and happy holiday season!

2. Food on the Run

My friends and I love to go out on Black Friday and the day after Christmas to shop. We start at 4 AM or 5 AM and shop 'til we drop. We consider hunting for holiday bargains an art. There is just no time to sit down for a meal when all those bargains are out there to be found! Such money saving shopping trips require pre-planning and excellent scheduling. So, we have learned to pack a picnic that we can eat while on the run. We bring holiday napkins and paper plates. We play seasonal music to get us in the the bargain hunting spirit.

The back seat rider is designated the picnic director and parcels out the treats, so the driver isn't distracted (from getting to the next sale)! Here are some things we bring with us:

  1. A thermos of hot coffee

  2. Fresh homemade oatmeal cookies.

  3. Chilled bottled water.

  4. Fruit:

  1. apples and blueberries

  2. cut up cantaloupe, cherries, and pre- peeled oranges

  1. A couple of boiled eggs tucked in a really, really cold cooler

  2. Unsalted nuts

  3. String cheese

There you have it. It keeps us energized, until we can stop for a lunch. Take time to eat well during the season.

3. Holiday Eating Tips

Who doesn't expect to overeat during the holiday season? There are so many temptations. After all, beautiful food and parties are what makes the season so special.

So, rather than obsess about losing weight at this time of year, why not just think about maintaining your weight? Enjoy this time, but use these quickie tips to save some extra calories.

  1. Drink a big glass of water before and after meals. Alternatives are unsweetened ice tea with lemon, fat free or low fat milk.

  2. Start your meal with a crunchy salad with crispy veggies. Avoid the creamy salad dressings.

  3. Ask for salad dressing on the side. Put a little dressing on the salad as you eat.

  4. Order an appetizer portion, rather than a big meal.

  5. Eat slowly! Put your fork down after each bite.

  6. Avoid the buffets. Order from the menu.

  7. Share your meal with your dining partner. Ask the waiter to split your meal in advance of bringing it to the table.

  8. Skip the butter, or if you can't do that, use only one tab, and enjoy it!

  9. If you want a dessert, drink a glass of water then order fruits.

  10. Go for a walk.

  11. If you order lattes or cappuccinos, ask for fat free milk.

4. Recipe Resources

Fruits and veggies can save lots of calories while providing essential nourishment. There are some really great, low calorie and low fat dishes that can be prepared that are festive, easy and really good.

Here is a terrific site for recipes. You can enter the type or types of fruits and vegetables you want to prepare, and then further narrow your search. This site has a wide variety of recipes to choose from. Each recipe has nutrition facts, too.

Killer Low Fat Dessert

If you are looking for a delicious, easy to prepare, low fat dessert, try this Apple Dumpling recipe. It uses egg roll wrappers. It has only 1 gram of fat. If you want to avoid using the brown sugar, use a substitute such as brown sugar Splenda. It is yummy!

Articles should be written in an easy to read format to meet the needs of a varied readership including seniors, family members of seniors, caregivers and other senior service providers.  

Topics should in some way be related to health, safety or injury prevention. Articles may not be an advertisement for services and must be informative or helpful. Author photo and contact information may be included. 

There is no guarantee that submitted articles will be published. Generally, articles will be held until the appropriate monthly theme. All articles become the property of SAFE Aging and are subject to editing.
